Christian Odzuck's work at Düsseldorfs Immermannhof assembles various fragments of those buildings in the station quarter that are currently being replaced by new construction projects into a tower-like crescendo rising towards the sky. The campanile of the former Franciscan monastery, whose weathercock adorns one of the architectural sculpture's tops, serves as a role model, as does its soup kitchen, the godfather of a meal from the goulash canon. He confronts the spolia of past and present with new fragments of free architectural speculation.
Odzuck thus creates an active monument that reminds us of our responsibility to build a bridge between history, the present and a future that still has to be invented. Ultra Ex Orbit" impressively and monumentally illustrates that these three factors do not have to contradict each other, but can form a synergistic conglomerate. The installation activates the site as one of the intersections in the urban network of time, city and space. It can thus be seen as a sign of departure in a quarter that will reinvent itself in the future.
