Notions of how to deal with public space can be very different from culture to culture. In southern spheres space is claimed by furniture, plastic stools, or even informal settlements. Gecekondu is the Turkish word for an informal settlement, an unplanned neighborhood with primitive accommodations on the periphery of a large city. Here, the act of self-empowering appropriation plays a major role. This is what Terrassino Poll refers to. Plastic stools of the kind generally found in loose groups in Asian cities function as construction material. They are used to produce individually composed free spaces of a highly informal urban quality. For instance, one can have one’s hair cut or play a game of chess while sitting on these stools.
