Proposal for the European Culture Capital Wroclaw, PL
2014
A legend said, that Jim Morrison saw an oil rig on the horizon from Santa Barbara beach at night. It was brightly illuminated and it appeared to him like a crystal ship. Beside this nice story, we can see that the change of perception can bring a totally different atmosphere. A profane industrial structure to suck out oil from nature in order to maximize profit becomes a mystical ghostship, not from this world.
Taking that as a starting point the Crystal Ship is a bright shining appearance in the landscape. The vessel goes on a journey from the city of Duisburg in the Ruhr area. The city of Essen and the Ruhr district were the European Culture Capital in 2010. Six years later a boat leaves to go from that area to the new capital. On its way to Wroclaw it crosses different places in Germany and Poland. Some of them quite spectacular—like the canal bridge in Magdeburg. The waterway system is traveled from west to east.
The Crystal Ship is a swimming multi-functional pavilion. It creates a connection to the idea of exchange which underlines the European Culture Capital movement. It provides a space for different functions which are determinated by a curated program. Besides the abstract qualities as an object in the landscape it is mainly a space for thinking.
